Empowerment8/26/2022 Empowerment of an individual is characterized by the degree to which they are self-determined. This enables them to represent their interests with responsibility and act on their own authority. It is a process in which someone becomes stronger and more confident with being able to control their life and claim their rights. Professional support can be empowering to those who feel powerless or lack influence by helping them overcome the feeling of not having any power.
Empowerment refers to "a person, people, or a community's process of becoming increasingly more able. The state of being empowered reflects the notion that there is value in collective empowerment and for both political and psychological reasons it has become an important topic in economic empowerment." Social work emphasizes the power of individuals. For example, in the field of citizenship education and democratic education, empowerment is thought to increase responsibility. This can be seen in discourses promoting civic engagement as a concept that moves away from seeing people as “deficient”. It also affects management concepts and areas like continuing education and self-help.
